Malleable Iron Pipe Fitting Standards: American, European, British and Japanese

PT Tri Sinar Purnama manufactures malleable iron pipe fittings across several standard families. For any given fitting, the applicable combination of design standard, thread standard, material specification and coating requirement depends on the product and on the order specification. No single standard listed here applies to every TSP product. This page explains how the families differ; the measured reference tables live on the Technical Data page.

The four layers of a fitting specification

Each standard family defines the same four layers, plus the end reinforcement. Reading a specification means reading all of them together — a design standard alone does not tell you the thread system, and a thread standard alone does not tell you the material.

LayerWhat it governs
Design standardThe fitting’s dimensions, geometry and rating class.
Thread standardThe thread form, taper and gauging system at the fitting’s ends.
Material specificationThe malleable iron grade the casting is produced to.
Zinc coatingThe coating requirement applied to galvanized fittings.
ReinforcementThe end form of the fitting — banded, beaded or plain.

American family

Design
ANSI/ASME B16.3, ANSI/ASME B16.14, ANSI/ASME B16.39
Thread
ANSI/ASME B1.20.1
Material
ASTM A197
Zinc coating
ASTM A153
Reinforcement
Banded

The American family uses NPT taper pipe threads to ANSI/ASME B1.20.1. Within TSP’s range it is the family most often specified where a project references ASME dimensional standards.

European family

Design
EN 10242
Thread
ISO 7-1
Material
EN 1562
Zinc coating
EN 10242
Reinforcement
Beaded

EN 10242 covers design, material designation and coating within a single standard, and pairs with ISO 7-1 pipe threads. Fittings in this family are beaded rather than banded.

British family

Design
BS 143 & 1256
Thread
BS 21
Material
BS EN 1562
Zinc coating
BS 143 & 1256
Reinforcement
Banded

The British family shares the EN 1562 material basis with the European family but keeps BS 143 & 1256 as its design and coating reference, with BS 21 threads and banded ends.

Japanese family

Design
JIS B 2301
Thread
JIS B 0203 / JIS B 0202
Material
JIS G 5702
Zinc coating
JIS B 2301
Reinforcement
Banded / Plain

JIS B 2301 covers design and coating, with two thread references — JIS B 0203 for taper pipe threads and JIS B 0202 for parallel pipe threads. TSP supplies this family in both banded and plain end forms.

SNI 0139. TSP’s range also carries the Indonesian national standard SNI 0139. In TSP product documentation it is grouped with the Japanese family and shown as SNI 0139 / JIS B 2301 on the products it applies to.

This is the framework TSP manufactures to. It does not mean every product complies with every standard listed, and it is not a statement that the families are interchangeable. Applicable standards vary by product — confirm them against the specific product and order.

How to choose the applicable standard

TSP does not publish selection rules of its own. In practice the applicable family is determined, in this order, by information the specifier already holds:

  1. Determine the project or specification requirement. Where a project, consultant or tender document names a standard, that requirement governs.
  2. Determine the thread system in use. The existing pipework and the thread standard it was built to constrain which family can be connected.
  3. Confirm the fitting type and size. Type, figure number and size range are what identify the individual product.
  4. Confirm the applicable TSP product documentation. Each TSP product shows its own design standard, thread standard, material and coating — read those rather than assuming the family.
  5. Request specification confirmation where needed. Where the documentation does not resolve the question, confirm with TSP before specification or ordering.
